你那些工作都在夜间完成的,那叫做纯粹的巴夏,在伊比沙岛,并且那是你将是你的第四个连续的四年.那个今年举办聚会怎么样?在集锦中是什么样的?

在集锦中,对我来说今年不会是就一个晚上，而且是每天晚上如此。那是对DJ的高度训练的反对。

最近我做了一张专辑是跟保罗，哈里斯和杰伊皮合作的，那个将会在今年年底发行，我想要做更多的，但是时间是最大的问题在平衡其它因素面前 。我尽量争取所有的时间都做协作，但是有些事情我得要依照原则和迫使这排入我的议程。

场景已改变很多，自从你动身后。你是怎么样做到一直处于你专业的最高位置呢？

整形手术。开玩笑的，我认为是热情，一旦你有热情这会推进你往前进的。有时我想你可以被接纳，但是除此之外，做DJ也是一种即时让人满意的事情，但是我每年试图或设置新的挑战给自己，并且做很多不同的事情因些那不会使自己变得陈旧，这确实是很重要的一个因素。几年前，我们做了电景，今年我们将会在伦敦有自己的俱乐部，但是期待在接下来的几年时，我会做个更大的台飞跃。

在未来的时间里，我们其它我们能期待彼特帮会呈现的呢？

你不得不等着看。。

他制作的Deleriums Silence完全打破了原来在英国的上榜记录。四周就上榜前十名。它曾是他在南美daytime radio中演奏的第一首dance track。目前他参与制作 的首张专辑In My Memory刚刚发布。 从此证明了Tiesto 是一个可以创作不同曲风的音乐人。也标志着tracks Flight 643能够在荷兰的音乐榜上直达前十名，并且超过Suburban Train。

您非常喜欢与他人分享音乐？

当然，我喜欢与他人分享在音乐上的快乐。

当您成为DJ或者制作人的时候，你认为在哪一方面上是你最大的突破？

我第一个最大突破是当我还是DJ的时候，好像是在1995年。 当我在演奏trance hunt的时候 ，我开始将其它人的音乐制作成DJ CD，我也是当时唯一这么做的人。 我那时有个称号叫“CD购买者”， 因为那时有很多我制作的CD在商店里出售。 我曾经有一个突破就是人们开始从由我制作的“Magik”DJ CD那儿来熟知我。

当你成被世界认为认可的一名DJ的时候，您的感觉是如何的？

我的梦像终于实现了。 我在俱乐部里面做DJ做了12，13年。成为一名在荷兰著名的D J曾一直是我的梦想。但现在已经成为全世界的DJ了。这是你难以想像的。 我的意思是说这所有的一切进行得如此之好并且是出乎我的意料。

对你来说，你最喜欢Track是哪一首？

我有好多首喜欢的track.其实它取决于观众。有时候我喜欢用重节奏的track来使夜晚变得动感时足，有的时候我喜欢感情表达得很鲜明一种演奏方式，所以很难说。

您说过当您成为DJ之后就会去很多地方旅游。但当您成为DJ以后，真正不得不在世界各地来回奔波的时候，您原现所对于旅游的那种激情至今犹存吗？

不像以前那么强烈了。 上飞机是一个很麻烦的事情，因为你要提前2个小时赶到机场。它会浪费你很多的时间。但我仍然喜欢旅行，去世界的各个地方。明天我会去香港，这周我一直呆在纽约。我去过巴拿马，我现在在温哥华。这生活真是美极了。我不是报怨（哈哈）。

您对于自己的出色作品的感受如何？

我的专辑In My Memory，因为里面有9首tracks，并且是多元化的。而且里面有一些“Balearic”风格的东西在里面。在“Flight 643”里面有一些techno，在 “Suburban Train”里面有trance的东西, 还有“Magic Journey”,在“Obsession”里面有各种progressive的东西在里面。我这些感到很自豪，它是我的第一张专辑。我将会制作我的第二 张专辑，而且会比第一张更好。

在你所有的演出中，有一场您认为表演的是最出色的一场而且至今还让您记忆犹新的吗？

当然有。那是第一次的“Innercity Live ”在 RAI Amsterdam. 那是我在荷兰的一大突破。从那次演出以后，我便在荷兰家喻户晓。所有的电视节目里，新闻报纸，以及各个媒体都争相报导。这算是我最好一次演出了。人们在整场演出当中都为我而尖叫。

你会紧张吗， 因为毕竟是算是一场大的演出？

是的，我很紧张。当演出结束的时候，我非常的开心，眼泪和幸福的心情交织在一起。因为最后我的演出成功了。从那以后，每一场的演出都让我记忆犹新。

很难在您所有的作品里做出选择，选出最好的几首。

（哈哈），那应该已经有几千首了吧！

你对于现在用MP3来代替CD 或者 VCD的方式来分享音乐的现象持有什么样的观点？而且这种方式对于你在南美的知名度起到一定的作用。

是的，这种方式曾对于我帮助很大。我不在乎人们用MP3的方式来分享音乐的。 但是从另一角度来说，这对唱片市场来说是致命的，因为它给许多音乐人造成了金钱上的损失。毕竟攒钱是一件大事。所以有利也有弊。特别是对于那个小的唱片公 司来说。诸如一些地下唱片公司，他们是以买DJ CD而维持生计。对于他们的影响是最大的。

一些电子音乐人正在尝试新的音乐，诸如 Paul Oakenfold，正在尝试“breakbeats”。你认为自己在未来也会在随着这种趋势下去吗？

有一些，但那些是秘密。 有的时候我必须在他人名义下去工作，因为我是和他们一起合作的。 但是我参与过Kamaya Painters,和其它的一些。 每个人都知道我参与过Gouryella, 或者Gouryella.我决定放弃Gouryella了，因为我现在已经不喜欢它的音乐了。

（哈哈）这有很多，Allure, Stray Dog…我也做过没有知道的“remixes”。

您最喜欢的曾与您合作过的音乐人是谁？

来自于 Junkie XL的Tom，因为他是很有才能的人。如果我和他一起来演奏track的话，效果可以与由整个乐队来演奏的效果相媲美了。我和他一起制作track Obsession和 progressive dance techno,感觉非常的富有活力。他非常喜欢和我一起合作，而且合作得很开心。

您准备好你要演奏的曲目以及对所有来自于观众的反应做好准备了吗？

至于要演奏的曲目，乘飞机我只能带100个录音带和一些CD，它们都是我精心挑选的。还是自然而然的好。我一直在听一些他们喜欢的音乐。但我想用自 己的方式来表达出来。有时我知道观众们喜欢重节奏的音乐。就像昨天我演奏的Calgary, 如果节奏太舒缓的话，那么在这么大的演奏室里听起就效果就不是很好。但如果在俊男亮女充斥的临近的俱乐部里演出的话，绝大多数时间我会演奏节奏比较舒缓的 音乐。我确信会让人们知道我将要给他们的感觉是什么。

您从什么时候开始认为是时候开始你自己音乐的？

从我在参与与他人制作音乐的时候，我经常会去作一些我并不喜欢的音乐。而且还必须把自已的音乐从录音带上再刻录到CD上面，这感觉真是糟糕透了。我觉得该到我自己做主的时候了，这也是为了我的未来着想。

当上百名美丽的女人在台下尖叫你的名字的时候，你有没有考虑过雇用保镖？
（哈哈），事实上，必不需要。 她们看到我很兴奋，但她们都很有礼貌，她们并没有脱掉我的衣服和伤害到我。 这不及Beatles里面的一员，或者….，我非常喜欢这种感觉，就像是你已经成为万众瞩目的焦点。

在你为一个女孩在她的胸部签名的第二天我就在互联网上看到了这张图片。我想你不止做过一次类似的事情了。

我曾经在一个女孩身上多处签过名（哈哈）…我认为你并不想知道。

您有女朋友吗？

我有一个女朋友。我的意思是说你需要一个女朋友。如果我还是单身的话，我会有许多。这样的话，我会在每一次的聚会过后与她们每一个都约会。（哈哈）。

随着媒体的介入，您认为个人形象对于一名DJ来说与音乐一样重要吗？

是的，我认为不仅仅是音乐很重要。更像是一场表演。所有的一切都是对于表演者来说的。我的意思是说就像Marilyn Manson，他必须穿得颜色很深。我在一场音乐会上看到他，那时他正在苏格兰演出。 那不仅仅关于音乐的问题而且还有形象的问题。我想对于一些DJ来说，是同样的。 如果你喜欢John Digweed，你喜欢他的那种’progressive”的东西在里面，不必须要笑，喊叫。我认为所有的前十名的DJ都拥有自己的风格和个人形象在里 面。

对于DJ Tiesto对您的未来有什么预想吗？

我现在并不知道。我对于我在过去的一年里所取得的成就感到很满意。我与许多音乐人合作过，也的世界上拿过6个奖项。我还有什么好奢望的呢？我现在只是想享受现在所拥有的，我现在很开心。

是的，我现在感到极度的兴奋（哈哈），而且这种感觉还将继续。我还有什么好奢望的呢？

我知道它的来之不易。您对于自己所付出一切有了回报。这就所有人梦想得到的。

你觉得在这种形式下对新的dj 有帮助吗？

你希望去哪个国家？

期待在亚洲的另一次巡回演出。我刚刚在亚洲和巴西进行过宣传，然后我们再回到欧洲。

我很喜欢“奋发”最喜欢的一首是“有关我们”里的CHUCK LOVE的写照。你有自己特别喜欢的一首歌不？

我喜欢所有的歌，我经常写很多歌，超过唱片所需要的歌曲，然后从中选一些自己喜欢的歌，因为不同的原因，我确实很喜欢那些歌。“乐趣”是我 最喜欢的歌曲之一，那是我和BLACK SPADE一起制作的，“如果”是另外一首我喜欢唱的歌，唱出来时都是二重单一的调。由于不同的原因，我对每首歌都有喜欢的缘由。

在“奋发”里，你和Chuck Love和 Black Spade 合作，在过去“阿曼的房子”系列里，你同样都跟DJSnek,Mark Farina 和Kaskade 合作，和这些名DJ或是艺术家工作在一起是怎么样子的？

我在芝加哥长大的，能在那里长大真是上天的恩赐，因为那里彻彻底底的改变了我的音乐前景和并且有那么多的音乐制作人，所以每个人都紧密的工作在一起。那确实很酷，但在那时你在一起的朋友们都是制作音乐的，因此你几乎视为当然。

当然开始写歌时那里和Sneak工作在一起，确实很开心，我喜欢他的音乐作品并且他很多年都一直有很好的作出呈现。真正令我开心的是最近Derek Cater重新制作“有关我们”这是他第一次混制我的音乐。

你是在有正规歌剧教育背景中成长的，你在小时候是否有想过成为歌剧歌唱家呢？

当然在4岁大时，我就经常想要成为一名歌手。我告诉我妈妈我想要唱歌，所加入一个唱诗班，开始练嗓子，古典的嗓音就是在那时形成的。我从未想过要当一名经典的歌剧歌唱家，但是那种嗓子的确是给我的一种礼物并且你确实不得不生来就享有那种形式的唱法，如我的兴趣所至，我天生就不应是歌剧歌唱家。

当我10岁时，我开始听家庭音乐，并且当我再长大一点时我开始倾向于舞蹈音乐，那对我来说更有意义。

你是一个非常独特的DJ，因为你不单单调节音乐，你还加入了你自己的调制元素。你认为这里促使你成功的因素不？

是的，我认为要现场表演,并且弹奏两者是一个非常有趣的结合,Chuck Love 对那个谙熟于心.对于观众看现场歌唱秀来说, 这两者是非常好的结合的演出,对我来说,这很有趣。我开始做DJ因此我能在现场唱歌，我从没想过我会成为DJ因为我的主要目标一直是成为一个歌手，因此能够两者兼得是非常酷的一件事。

你同样也是“超级JANE 团体”的创办人，你可否透露点有关此团队的消息给我呢？

我们只是创建了超级简的十年，我们不再真正的经常在一起表演，我们和精灵吧一起在WMC为周年纪念时一起表演，那样很棒因为我们能跟所有的女性保持很好的友谊，偶尔在一起表演感觉很好。希瑟和我在去年制作了阿曼的房子并且出去了进行宣传旅行，这很让人兴奋，这么长时间做朋友而且还能够一起做DJ真是太好了。

你的磁带“催眠的感觉”在穿普拉达的魔鬼声道中是具号召力影响力的。他们怎么会选出你的声音去配电影呢？

我其实并不知道，那是Black Liquip Remix 中的”催眠的感觉”，然后他们得到我的号码，打电话给我时我正在家具店购物。他们说我们把你的音乐都混到穿普拉达的的魔鬼里了。我看了本书，我知道MERY STREEP也在那电影里面，因此我得知那是一部有名的电影作品，我是如此兴奋，但是当然在电话里我说“噢，那很好，写上我的名称”但是在心里我想着太好了！！！

对此事我毫不知情,但我很感激他们选我的音乐去配电影,这个对音乐有如此好的机会,我的确很高兴。

你认为在电影中有你的音迹有助于你更加的受欢迎和更加有名声不？

我认为任何时候舞蹈音乐都有机会在电影或是电视中出现，这通常有助于流派的，特别是在州区的地方，那里音乐舞蹈并不像其它类型的音乐一样的被尊重的，因此我认为在电影中出现对于舞蹈音乐的每个人都有帮助的.

在加拿大也同样的，我来自英国那里家庭音乐是主流，但是这里你从收音机里听不到什么家庭音乐。

这是在网络或是凌晨二点的秀，但是这的确不是主流，我想事情总是在慢慢改变，几年前他们给格莱美奖最佳舞蹈音乐奖分了类别，除此之外最好的混舞或者最好的舞蹈专辑，我认为很细小的事情像格莱美分类别都能促进它向前走。

昨晚上你在阳光吧里做DJ，你现在弹的是何种音乐风格？

我演奏一种我自己的歌曲从催眠当中来，现在从”奋发”中来,和另外一些单一如我喜欢的那种，并且能和演奏音乐一样好的调子，有些是非常现代的，有些很经典。

首要的事情,几个月前你在做着一份正常的白天上下班工作,现在你却全世界到处飞,出现在你的个人音乐录像中,并且发表杀手的影迹,这致使大家议论纷纷.你可否描述下这种感受呢?

这很奇异的,这是那些我一直作为工作的方向,只要我记得,我都为之梦想努力的事情,而且现在这确实发生了,并且我不认为这会完全的走下坡.当我给别人打工时,我在4点钟就起床工作,做着轮班的工作,然后再在影音室里工作直到麻木的时刻,然后第二天又重复前一天的工作,在那时,我是如此努力的工作.现在我没有一份正常的工作,甚至是更少的工作! 我想我得重新设置我的工作时钟,但是不像以前那么早.

在之前的几个月里,是否有特殊的时刻,那是真正的没法挺住的?

发生了很多事情,但是我想主要的事情就是在标记在宇宙阿波罗里带给我的变化. 我从没想象过有专辑会成为主流,但是并非少见的,一些我喜爱的,给我开启了许多大门.

你认为对于你目前的成功来说,主要是什么因素呢?

正确的是因为我试图去形成我个人的声音风格.为之我已经创作了好几年,但是有一些事情好像在18个月前有滴答声,并且我认为我发现了声音能够让我很舒适的工作着.我就去录音室然后记录下有趣的轨迹. 我现在每个周末都会离开会DJ的工作,我等不及想要回去,然后再为我下一次的GIG写新的东西.

你的专辑”改变”收到了疯狂的反馈,甚至”胖男孩SLIM”中都有翻唱过! 自从去年开始一直是收藏在DJ的盒子里,现在已发行在主打的”阿波罗”中,你认为这将会是受欢迎的?

没有,不要让我误解,当然从去年八月份开始写这首歌时,我超级兴奋! 我完成了它并且直接通过信息直接发给Desyn Masiello, 我们都有点兴奋, 那天他把这个放在他的多个文件夹中, 并在用符号标记为下一个,在那时,我很兴奋我已经写歌了这是我过去一直努力的,,这也会让我在家庭音乐的领域得到认可。在那里，我感觉这是我改变音乐路线的标志，我设想在某种程度上这是正确的?

我并没有在工作室里试图写忙改变的后继。我只是因为创作而创作，并且如果事情变得很好，那这就可以作为个后续，如果“宇宙”想要这样子。如果失败的话我将会继续发行我的音乐在“有前途的音乐”中。

对于那些对你的DJ类型不熟悉的人，你是怎么样描述你的风格呢?

我设想我试图演奏所有种类的家庭音乐。我演奏的音乐通常都很肮脏的,要用精力和音乐机构的。这些有任何意义不?

你的主打“有关途的音乐”做得很好，你为何决定制作自己的商标当你作为DJ的角色和产品制作者?为提升的音乐,你下一步作何打算?

当我加入24管理时,有前途的音乐仅仅是作为我自己原创作品的一个出口，我并不很期待这种音乐会如此的受欢迎,并且我们决定开始演唱其它人的专辑作为自己的作品发布。下一张的是发行是一张新专辑，是Sebastien Leger feat Gia Mellish V Hypnotized ，那是我为蹦弹混制的。从那后我有一个惊人的合作是Micky Slim的到来，叫作震动。一个很精彩的部分就是我认为是我们两个特点的结合。同样我们设立Rising Trax ,那是特写其它的艺术家。第一次这样的发布是有点舞蹈味道的Gem是俄罗斯的的DJ制作者 DJ毕业生，叫作钢琴99，通过Noiz用最茺谬的混制，同样也是来自俄罗斯。相信我，你从来没听到过这样子的细目分类，这已驱使我的精神有好几个月。

你在接下来的几个月里你会有些什么活动呢？

除了我前面提到的发布之外，

我有一些新混制的东西即将弄出来.我已经再混Axwell V Watch 的日出,在8月下旬会出来, Lifelike&Kris Menace V Discopolis 为了Defected,会在九月份现来,当然,还有“改变“。

最后,你是怎么感知Pete Tong说你自从Mylo之后从苏格兰制作出来的是你最好的一样东西？

没有对Pete冒犯的意思这是很多的感激，但是你必须是疯狂的！

The first time I saw you was in Rome at Goa Club.

When?

A year and a half ago.

That was crazy.

Yeah, It was AWESEOME.

It was crazy.

You played Energy Flash and you mixed it into Warm Leatherette. And then I have a mix of yours, La Boum Deluxe, and you also did the same mix. It’s awesome. I was wondering have you always had Energy Flash on rotation or did you play it ten, fifteen years ago and stop -

I played it ten years ago and even Warm Leatherette I played twenty years ago already. So, so I think it really works together. The two pieces, they are timeless music, you know, they work really well by themselves, I think if you a good DJ you should drop stuff like that in your DJ set and not only the brand new stuff. That’s what I’m doing.

Right on. And at Goa Club you were supposed to play with Mount Sims. You were on a tour with him, and since then I’ve noticed that you’ve toured with him some more. Is there a special relationship between the two of you?

I think I have a special relationship with every kind of Gigolo artist, like Dirty Princess, so I, you know, we are, like after a while it becomes like a friendship, you know, because I hope they become comfortable with the Gigolo family and with Mount Sims, you know, I saw him and I realized that he is such a talented artist and a great musician, a great performer, you know, I was just following my instinct and when I see something great I try to pick it up and take care of it and maybe give it some advice, give some background or some help or some security, you know, to let the people know that they can do whatever they want. That’s what I told Dirty Princess that there’s no limit. I will let them know if there is a limit, if they go too far

Are Dirty Princess relatively new to Gigolo?

Brand new.

This year?

Yeah, brand new. I saw them performing and they sent me some video material and I really liked they way they doing it, they make it quite new and unique to me so I invite them to play already some shows together. And tonight and then next week we play at the Crystal… in Berlin, it’s a big gay parade in Berlin… and they’re going to perform at after party.

They’re a good example of how when you play the audience doesn’t just get a set; there’s always a big production that accompanies your set. Has it always been like that?

Not always. When Fischerspooner come into the picture, you know, I tried to learn something, get more influence from a more artistic-side how to present and how to do things differently and Fischerspooner, I think, when they came to Berlin everybody was shocked because, you know, nobody knew what to expect or what kind of show they’re doing. But it’s all performance, it’s all art. Even they had some special things. If something went wrong live then or there were some small mistakes they made a big scene, they made… even stopping the music and saying Let’s do it again, we did something wrong… Each band or group has it’s own way of doing and my thought is to watch them and let them know that somebody believes in them.

I had been under the impression that you were the one who set the precedent for these spectacular shows and FS were following suit.

I am the president?

No, the precedent, the first one to do that sort of thing.

O, also I like to be the first one. (laughs) Sorry. (banter with Dirty Princess)… All I try to do is help the artist, and push them. I did it with Miss Kittin, with Zombie Nation, with Fischerspooner, with Tiga, with a lot of people. They try to get in the spotlight… I’ve been in the business since a long time and I think Gigolo made a pretty strong impact.

(German banter)

I have most of your Love Parade sets since 1998. Throughout the years the amount of electro increases. How did electro (in it’s present incarnation) first come to your attention and who were the first artists and what were the tracks that first intrigued you?

Well, I could give you a historical lesson… Ladies, you want some champagne? Of course, I know you!

(banter in English and German).

As I remember, the first time electro funk or electro music was created was when Afrika Bambaataa and Arthur Baker played rock. That was the first… to me, understanding of electro funk music. They combined Kraftwerk - Trans Europe Express with some electronic funk beats. I think it was one of the first records that they call, that they called electro. That was the early ’80s… Kraftwerk already did a lot of, so-called now, electro funk music. I think electro music was always there in different forms. What Gigolo did or what we tried to do was… try to bring this type of music back on planet Earth and combine it - like in the ’80s with pop music - and tried to give them a new flavour, a new place and even that time when we start doing it there was no live acts, there was only DJs playing the whole night. We tried to bring some faces and performances and some, you know, excitement back to the club because it was all faceless, just name DJs playing all night and it was quite okay for the period but it was ready for the change. So that’s how I felt, The funny thing is that some press people or all the press people were jumping on the electroclash hype and give them a name, you know… I think there were so many misunderstanding and wrong - like wrong way of writing about what’s the new thing, what electroclash should be,. I think at the end it went really funny because a lot people say electroclash is like Peaches or retro or even, even Chicks on Speed or they say Felix da Housecat was electroclash, DJ Hell was electroclash. So they brought everything into the picture, you know, even in the fashion scene it went really popular and everyone was talk about electroclash. But in every article I was really laughing when they get the names down, they were doing the name-dropping and they write down what’s the real electroclash and they write down about Peaches and even Fischerspooner, you know, I think these people have nothing to do with electro funk or even Afrika Bambaataa. Maybe Casey Spooner never heard Planet Rock, I don’t know, you know, or people like Peaches were never thinking that she’s going to be part of some super hype in 2000, you know, she was doing her thing, you know, nobody now call Peaches now electroclash, nobody call maybe somebody still call me electroclash DJ because that’s where I get a lot of spotlight but at the moment since 2002 I didn’t play a lot of electro stuff maybe it’s already coming back. I don’t know because it’s always going in circles, you know, like two years ago there was acid music coming up again, a lot acid Chicago house music, very popular so, so I think to me right now there is a big difference between kind of melodic kind of flavour, going back early ’90s from the trancey music but not the version that’s here right now, there’s a new kind of flavour, it’s got a very darker side, very experimental but but it’s still the flavour. So, it’s changing and the press is kind of slow you know, so I talk to you. Maybe let them know what I think about this. You know, it’s funny to see the hype , we passed it, a lot of people say that it’s over, Gigolo records are not hip anymore because, you know, already in 2002 we had Fat Truckers, we had Mu, we had like The Psychonauts, we had like a lot of rock bands from London to Gigolo and there nothing to do with electroclash but in the papers they were always named… The Psychonauts and Fat Truckers were hardcore rock ‘n roll… it’s always funny to see what the press thinks and what they’re not thinking… I can give you my definition of what’s hip or not. Maybe Gigolo isn’t hip anymore, who cares.

I think the term electroclash is being used in the same way many people use the term techno. They don’t realize that it’s not an umbrella term but a genre within electronica.

Defintions change everywhere…

Your last self-produced album was New York Muscle. I really enjoyed it My favourite track on it is Keep on Waiting.

I don’t know why, it’s not even the lyrics but both of them have such a similar feeling… How did New York influence you?

The city, the city. You know, if you live in New York… it influences everything… it is the most powerful place….

(Hell asks the cameramen to be quiet in English)

New York is like the place that, you know, it’s like, like, such an energetic and powerful place, you know. It was my idea to go there and get all the influences, all the energy, get the muscle… working in the studio and at the end we had this product coming out, this Muscle, and I’m still proud of it. I think it’s a very strong statement. I hope it’s going to be a soundtrack to a movie in New York.

It could very well be.

Maybe it’s more like a soundtrack for the city.

Could you ever live there?

I was living there in ‘94 and I was living there right at the production twice… but i miss it already I always feel very comfortable there and I feel like I have nothing to explain, where everyone understands what I’m trying to saying. All the freaks come together, you know… it’s a great time… not feel like an outsider where misunderstand all the time… there’s power over there, it’s a great city.

So, then why is your label based in Munich? Talking to other Germans I’ve been told that Munich is kind of snobby and conservative everything that International Deejay Gigolo isn’t.

Maybe we snobby, I don’t know. But, if it’s necessary we can be whatever you want. I think, I think Munich was just the city only because I was living there and i don’t want to move but right now the label is already in Berlin. We moved there and operating out of Berlin. The label is there, the office is there, the booking is there. We still have an office in Munich but Berlin is the city of the moment. I mean, it always was; it’s a great city. We decided to move two years ago… it’s a new stuff, new office, new action, new people. And it’s great there. Do you like Berlin?

Berlin? Yeah, it’s my favourite city in the whole wide world.

Berlin?

Yeah.

Yeah, I guess it was Diego Ro-K who brought you to Buenos Aires?

No, Romina Cohn.

Is she still on your label?

Yeah, of course. She’s busy touring and she did a compilation; It’s Only Gigolo but I like It. For the Argentina market. And she mixed all Gigolo records. She’s coming to Germany after the summer, going to stay here and tour in Europe. That’s the plan. With her mother, of course.

With her mum?

Yes her mother is coming. I like her mum. They are quite close. The mother is, like, protecting her, kind of, because she has trouble with flying.

You are playing at the Goethe Institut in Tokyo.

I actually played there last week.

I think that’s so cool that the Goethe Institut, which represents Germany, would be so creative and innovative as to bring in a DJ.

Why not? Sorry, what’s the question?

The question is, basically, why is Germany so cool? Why are Germans so cool that they are open-minded enough they exhibit you instead of a German painter from the 18th century.

There were also other artists from Germany presenting… I did it already in Mexico… and some other countries. I’m representing Germany, I’m representing myself, representing Gigolo, representing a lot of people, so they invite me… and I got there, I will make it happen It was great time again…

As a DJ you are constantly working at night. It must be difficult not having a daytime life.

I have a daytime life when Im back home, when Im not playing, you know. But, my body is used to switch. Sometimes I switch instantly, like, I know Friday, Saturday Im going to go to bed very late and sometimes I take a few days to recover. But Im used to it.

It must be worse when you are switching timezones.

Yeah, but, when I was young, I mean younger and not DJing, I mean, I was going out anyways on weekends so its nothing new. What is difficult is the traveling, the waiting time, the hotels; that you cant stay in bed as much as you want. You know, before I would go and party and go to bed and sleep until six in the afternoon if I wanted and when you DJ you have a plane to catch or hotels kick you out at 12.00 or 13.00 and then you have to wake up so thats the hard thing about it. Besides that everything is cool.

Do you tour very often?

For DJs, you know, its not like for musicians. Its not like, OK, I released an album and Im going to tour for six months in a bus and Im going to do rock shows. DJs work every weekend so its like being on tour all the time and not being and never being on tour at the same time; because Im going home normally on Sundays. I leave home on Friday and I come back on Sunday. Its like, people go to work in an office from 08.00 to, or 09.00 to 17.00 and I dont work on weekdays but Im putting all my energy from Friday to Saturday.

And what do you do in your spare time?

Well, well, taking care of all the things. Like my health, the decisions to make for the future projects and beside job I love to meet my friends, have lunch, talk and exchange ideas. I love to watch movies, I love to read, I love to, Im … but Im constantly creating something. Im always keeping myself busy with ideas things and Im always, like, sewing something, drawing something, doing music… Its, its, its never ending, you know.

How long did it take to finish your i.com album?

I dont know, I think it took more or less a year but if you, if you reduce it to the actual time we spent in the studio its probably only three months. Three months spread on a year or so.

Are you going to be playing much in Ibiza?

Three times.

At Wildlife?

Yes, Im looking forward to it.

I think thats going to be the best night in Ibiza.

Yeah?

Yeah, totally. What do you think about Ibiza?

Ibiza is, like, such a legend, you know? You have such high expectations when you go on this island that the first time I went there I didnt get it.

As a DJ or as a clubber?

As a DJ. As a clubber Ive never been before because its not the type of clubs that Id go. I prefer to go to a warehouse where its dark and its dirty… I was invited to play at Pacha and I didnt like it at all.

No?

No, because I was treated really bad by the people at the club. I mean, the audience, they loved what I did but Tiga and me played in a small floor and we were kicked out by the security because apparently we were partying too much in the DJ booth. Everybody else is doing cocaine on tables but we couldnt dance in the DJ booth and I said Never again I will be involved with Ministry of Sound and never again I will ever play at Pacha… and if Pacha one day calls me they have to apologize for the security. This was my experience in Ibiza and I was like I was not as famous as today, you know, today I would go at Pacha and everybody would polish my shoes and lick my ass - like in the song - but I never forget things like that because you are an artist, you deserve respect, you know. And that was like, with Sven, when Sven asked me to play at Cocoon I knew I will be treated good because Sven treats artists with respect. I dont know about the club outside Cocoon… Maybe its the same, maybe they treat people like shit, I dont know, but to me I was always treated good and I always gave something extra special to this place. For Sven, for respect. For Sven to bring me and make me like me Ibiza and to understand the spirit of the island, so now I go to Ibiza and I, I its one of my favourite place in the world because I start to know, to know the… this energetical field you have on this little island which you can feel when you are on holidays somewhere and you dont party, and thats great. And Sven showed me this bringing me to Cocoon and thats great.

I think Cocoon/Wildlife is going to be the only party on Ibiza where they actually introduce new music and the audience isnt just there to get high and party all night and all day but they actually want to hear interesting sounds and interesting mixes.

Yeah, well, thats due to the amazing team that this Cocoon, like, its a family, its really a family and when they invite you, you are part of that family and this spirit - thats what people want to see when they go to clubs. They dont want to feel, OK, Im going to a club, Im paying a lot of money to see a guy whos going to get twenty thousand euros, a flight in a private jet and play all the hits. Thats not enough anymore. Especially in Ibiza because there is such a big war between the clubs: Who is going to get the best crowd and stuff and Sven always manage to make the people feel like a family and thats the difference because people come to Cocoon, Amnesia they have the feeling that they are part of the show, you know. Thats it. Because Sven is really communicating so much with the audience and most of the DJs he books are like that. I think.

Is that the same relationship you have with The Loft in Barcelona?

Yes. But in The Loft the difference is that its not Cocoon, you know. Its The Loft itself, I really get on well the people. They are friendly, they are enthusiastic, they follow me in every move I make and they make me feel like home and outside personal, this personal emotion you can feel; technically thats one of the best sound system and best atmosphere in the place Ive experienced. And, yeah, I love The Loft.

I love how theyre so organized and professional. I think its the most respectable club in Barcelona.

I think people are sometimes - in everywhere around the world - the big mistake of clubs is to think O, Im legendary, Im big, I am a big name and then people should be happy to come to my place, you know. No, its not like this. You have to… people are the kings of the night, you know . Its not really the DJ or the club itself or the people in the club. So you have to, you have to spoil the audience and make the party happen.

So, Barcelona is still one of your favourite places to play?

Yes, definitely. Because, because I can always play what I want, I never have the feeling that I am trapped into a style. I mean, everywhere, around the world, I never say O, I cant play this or I cant play that. I hear a lot of DJs that say O, I cant play techno there, its too hard for them or I cant play more house or I cant be crazy, you know, and its like you put your own barriers, you know, but, its true, in Barcelona, for me, its easy. Im like, its going to be cool and people will enjoy and its going to be crazy and how, and how can I make it even more crazy than last time and how can I make it even more surprising? Its amazing at The Loft,every time, yeah, last time was crazy but its even more crazy and more crazy and more crazy and it, it became a joke. Like OK Caro, whats going to happen this time? Thats amazing!

Ok, heres my last question. When you were growing up you were exposed to all types of music by your parents. Do you parents care for electronic music?

O yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. My dad not too much. Hes more, actually, into hip hop because my brothers are; they are ten years younger than me and they are really into hip hop and so my dad had to bear hip hop so he, he liked, for example, things like the last Madonna album that is really electronic, he liked it, you know. Hes really aware. They are young, my parents. My mum, yeah. Shes such a big fan of Laurent Garnier. Shes like, he even calls her when he playing, he puts her on the list… She drives to see him in Spain - she lives in Spain. Its funny, my parents are big fans, you know.

Do they understand or do they think its even right how youre so important to so many people, like, youre such a big celebrity but you just play music?

Thats a good question. Well, I think my mother always knew that since I started she, she saw me many times so each time she saw me she saw the evolution and she understood, she was like, Wow, thats crazy.. how much you can touch people. Shes even more conscious about it than I am because she, she, she can watch it from a distance. Im not, Im part, Im into it. My dad - its another story. I think my dad didnt really understand until he saw me live and then, and since then now, you know, he, he, I think hes more crazy about Miss Kittin than Caroline which is a bit bizarre to me, so…. hes really proud of my success and he, he still lives in a little town so for him, he likes the idea of being in the jet set, because he is the father of someone famous and, you know, my mum is proud because she is my mum, because I am her daughter, but for my dad its a little bit more superficial…. I think my dad is not involved, he never experienced techno music the way my mum did and I was never that connected to my dad as I am with my mum so thats probably the reason.

He probably just doesnt know you as well as she does.

Yeah, thats it. Yeah, so but these things, now he wants to know me more because of that and I dont need it and so its very strange. But its good, we are on good terms but I am totally aware of whats going on so I can deal with it.

You seem very, very intelligent.

No, Im not intelligent. Thats, thats, no, thats… no, no, but I realized the other day, like, like, if I would do a test for intelligence i would fail because i have zero mathematic intelligence, the logical - the logic - you know when you do tests on magazine, try to find the solution to a problem, I never make it. I think its more the sensibility, the intuition…

You will be in Buenos Aires on December 11th playing at the South American Music Conference. Will you be attending any of the talk/workshops given at the Conference?

Maybe I will.. I didn’t even know about that… It’s the first South American music conference? Yeah, I’ll try to. It depends. I think I’ll be playing in Santiago the night before so I have to get a copy of the schedule but I would like to spend an extra day. I’d like to. I like conferences.

Do you think it will influence Miami’s WMC’s importance?

Miami’s getting a little, I don’t know, it’s been going for a long time, it could do with a little competition… the Miami conference has never been so great, I mean, it’s okay but musically it’s pretty lame, not like Sonr in Spain.

I like your bio. At first I believed it but then firgured out that it’s making fun of all those DJ bios that desperately want to be highbrow and intellectual. Did you write it?

Yeah, I mean the thing about bios and videos and all that kind of stuff is that they can get kind of boring if you take them too seriously. I have to entertain myself and my friends… it’s not poking fun at anyone specifically… Anything you write in your bios ends up being reality because people read it all over the world and end up recycling little bits and so I think I took that idea and had fun with it because you can say anything you want and it becomes true. Years later, I mean now the things I’ve written in that biography or other biographies people keep repeating … it’s funny because you create your own history.

The video for It’s Gettin’ Hot in Here’, was it your idea?

Yeah.

Did you get any feedback from Nelly?

I didn’t hear from Nelly personally… That video did really well. It got a lot of play on MTV. In Europe it was number one on MTV Dance Videos for a while and even in the States it was played a lot. It was my little brother that did the puppets. It was a great video, I was really happy with it.

Are you still throwing parties at the Society of Art & Technology?

No. I stopped doing parties over there. I think they still do parties over there but I haven’t - . I’ve been traveling too much, touring too much, working on my album… For me it’s better to DJ at a party in Montral than organize the party. I’ll do one in the winter probably I’ll probably do one in January or February.

I think it’s awesome that you have it at the SAT. That would be impossible in Vancouver. City Hall officials in Montreal seem a lot more flexible than the ones in Vancouver regarding nightlife.

Yeah, I think they’ve become more flexible. They didn’t use to be but the whole dance scene is pretty big in Montreal and I think they’ve just had to accept it.

Do you have any labels besides Turbo Recordings and White Leather?

There was a house label… but we haven’t really done much on that one. No, as far as labels go it’s Turbo and White Leather and smaller labels, I guess sub-labels, but mainly Turbo. No, that’s it for labels. Turbo’s doing really really well. We released the Chromeo album this is a Turbo record they’re playing right now and we’ve got a lot of new releases right now. We’re focusing a lot on Montreal bands…

Are you releasing a lot of techno right now?

Techno? I don’t know what to call the music I do… everything has a techno influence

But you used to be a techno DJ before?

Yeah, that’s what I would have been classified as but I’ve always played everything… it depends because sometimes I’d be a ‘rave’ DJ, sometimes a hard techno DJ, I played breaks for a while, funky house, back to techno. Techno’s always been there, it never goes away.

Do you have any albums?

Yeah, my first album, my debut album, will be coming out in April. It should be finished by December. It’s coming out on Turbo… a real artist album… it’s all original stuff, all self-produced… a lot of singing, a lot of song.

Do you still play Satisfaction when you play at clubs?

It depends on the club and how often I play there!

Has Satisfaction been used for any commercials?

Not sure. Maybe in Australia, I’d have to check. Another track, Able to Love, was used for a beer commercial in USA, I think.

Do you feel obligated to put that bass line to rest now that it’s been heard the world over?

No obligations! Just a nice bass line…

Some people have dismissed you as a ‘one hit wonder but you already are an accomplished DJ, producer and remixer. What are your most notable achievements?

I try not to take myself too seriously. Together with my cousin Alle I make electronic music in the studio and DJ at night. We do what we do. It’s the rest of the world that decides if something we produce is a hit, not us! Apart from our productions I’m very honoured to have remixed artists of the like of Outkast and Goldfrapp, without wanting to omit anyone. It was also great to be invited to remix a Subliminal Sessions compilation.

Would you like to continue being such a celebrity or would you like to go back to being a more anonymous figure in electronica?

Same as above, really. It’s the rest of the world that decides, not me. I’d be a liar if I denied how much I am enjoying traveling and being able to play my music all over the world…

A lot of websites talk about how you were influenced by early electro (i.e. > Kraftwerk). How about Italian house? Any artists/albums that made an impact on you?

Well I was pretty impressed by Black Box who are from the same town I grew up in, Reggio Emilia. Daniele Davoli, DJ and producer from Black Box, now lives in London and has a thriving career in music. He is a great friend and helped me find my bearings when Satisfaction exploded.

What kind of music do you play when you DJ? What music did you play before this new electro existed?

I’m never quite sure how to define genres in dance music. They seem to invent a new term every three hours. I play electro tech house, I suppose! But there are no boundaries for me. I have spent years developing my instinct and that’s what I trust. So I play what feels right…. Before? I have always had an eye on the electronic strand of dance music and various contaminations of house and electro, but, sure, I played a lot of tribal progressive too!

In an interview you talk about how the new electro is reinvigorating the nightclubs. I couldn’t agree with you more. What do you think makes electro so special? Why does it make everyone smile?

Who are The Biz?

The Biz are a duo, Paul French and Violeta. They have a live show that lasts about forty minutes performing with great choreography tracks from Hypnotica. I am now working on a new single for them that’ll just come out as THE BIZ, without Benny Benassi presents.

What’s up with the photos of all four of you in a beige turtlenecks (and you are sporting a comb-over)? They’re very funny yet kind of disturbing.

We were all feeling very arty and working with a graphic artist director who’s a friend. We were all on a post-Kraftwerk, Star Trek meets the nerds type trip.

How is your search a new female vocalist? I’m hot, I love doing karaoke and I have little shame. What are my chances of being one of the finalists?

I don’t know, I don’t know, we think we’ve found THE voice but it’s too early to reveal more right now. But don’t hesitate to send me a tape. Shameless is my motto!

Well, Berliniamsburg ran for two years and they were gorgeous electro-punky years. But in NYC, you get a year or so of cool and then the nights change. It is good to keep locations changing and the sounds changing because otherwise they get stale and predictable. The crowd that comes to Disgraceland is more mixed and less hipster-y than the Brooklyn party, largely I assume because the location.

On your website it says that Berliniamsburg was a reaction to all the stale club music that was ubiquitous in Manhattan at the time like house, trance, rock n roll oldies. How come electro isn’t considered stale when so much of it is influenced by ’80s synth pop?

Certainly all music is inspired by earlier music… i.e. house was related to disco… The new electro sounds that I championed had a very different sound quality and lyrical language than the first wave. More distortion and more modern subjects and performance. I don’t really play much of the early electro because i am not an archivist.

A lot of the time you have W.I.T. in tow when you go on tour. I’ve heard their debut album a few times and they’ve just never grown on me. Besides the fact that they’re really hot and have pretty voices I just don’t see the appeal. You created W.I.T. - what is it that I’m not getting?

In the old days of new wave there was the avant garde group The Fall and there was Bananarama. Each had their purpose and each had their appeal. Some people liked the Fall, some people like the pop of Bananarama, and some people liked both. I played both the fun/trashy music AND the artsy/nutritious music. Trying to read more into WIT as though they were to be compared to Peaches or Chicks is comparing apples and oranges. I never got to see a sexy live girl group back in the day, though I am sure they did shows. I thought they were funny

and cute. AND smart. They no longer exist, unfortunately.

The lead singer of W.I.T. was/is a model. Was she the inspiration for Supermodel, Inc.?

No, I wrote that years before I met Melissa. I wrote the original hit

“Supermodel(You better Work)” for a drag queen Rupaul and it became the #1 dance song of 1993 in Billboard Magazine. They included it on the Lizzie Maguire soundtrack this year earning me my first double platinum record. For a tranny anthem!!??!! You better Work, right?

Mogul Electro, your electro label, is part of a larger company of yours, Love Machine

Music Inc. What other music and artists do you promote?

I am the only Mogul Electro artist. I do compilations because I like to hear new bands and artists. On my new solo album coming out early next year I have guest appearances, by Princess Superstar, Andy Bell of Erasure, and a five year old girl named Amanita with lots of new producers and vocalists. It is my calling to introduce people to new artists.

Lady Kier has been touring with you as of late. How long have you been working together? Is she your opening act? Please don’t tell me she plays ‘Groove is in the Heart during each set.

We would be so lucky is she played ‘Groove’. Don’t you agree it is divine? She doesn’t though. I have done about six gigs with her but I don’t think the upcoming Vancouver date is one, unfortunately. And I could only open for her. She’s such a goddess.

For some reason I can’t picture you playing in Ibiza (unless, perhaps, it was for a Har Mar party at Manumission) even though Felix da Housecat, DJ Hell and Miss Kittin, etc. do on a semi-regular basis. Am I off?

No, I have a great bathing suit all packed for Ibiza. My set now is ready for Ibiza and I almost got to do it this year. Do you think I still play teeth grinding chatter-clash that I played in a small experimental club in NYC three years ago? The point has been made and I have moved on to dirty distortion disco. In 77 it was Donna Summer, in 80 it was Joy Division, in 85 it was Yazoo, in 88 it was Run DMC, In 90 it was Jack Your Body, in 93 it was KLF, in 98 Sneaker pimps, in 2001 Electroclash. This is 2004 and we have to select music that works for this moment only.

Some would say that DJ Hell is your European counterpart as he also runs a very important label, has hosted his own club night (Club Villa) and parties and is (surprise!) a DJ as well. Also, both of you have been around in the scene for a good while now. Would you agree that the two of you have similar roles?

We both support a lot of new artists and have had similar tastes from time to time. But we are very different personalities.

Have you ever worked with DJ Gigolo Records?

I have never been associated with Gigolo but I have introduced a couple acts to DJ Hell.

When I was in Barcelona (summer 2003) I was amused that at a regular club I’d see the majority of the girls wearing ‘electro clothes and when I went to clubs that played predominantly electro there was a significantly smaller number of chicks wearing ‘electro clothes. Since grunge I haven’t seen any other genre of music so widely marketed. Is it because off the shoulder tops and fishnets are sexy or is there something else that makes it so pop?

What music doesn’t have a dress code. Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes, Richie Hawtin, DMX? I think fashion is fun and disposable but the main thing about the fashion that I was aware of with the groups I supported, was how un-uniform it was. People really expressed themselves very differently from one another and that to me is exciting. Peaches didn’t dress like Fischerspooner didn’t dress like Ladytron didn’t dress like Felix didn’t dress like The Scissor Sisters.

I truly think the world is a better place now that electro is here. It brings out the kid in everyone, you see the dance floor full of people goofing off and laughing and really dancing. Do you think all this horseplay at the disco will make us less pretentious and more easygoing?

I love a club that is fun and the patrons enthusiastically take part in making it special. Electro clubs DO tend to be more fun. AND much sexier than clubs filled with worker drones, strippers, and bouncers.

You can’t refute the fact that a lot of electro is influenced by the music of the ’80s. I think your current president still hadn’t found God at that time so he is probably well-versed in extreme decadence and music of that era. Do you think he’d get a kick out of electro?

Our president George W. Bush would not like electro. That I am sure.

What are my chances of getting hired by you? Do you think Fischerspooner could do with a female Peanuts?

There is a very good chance you are working for me already according to these very informed questions. And yes, I think Fischerspooner could definitely use a female Peanuts. You should apply.
